arrblshade.gif (1167 bytes) Cool Edit does not play/record

Solution 1 (recording through Codec)

  • In Cool Edit: menu Options, select wave device
  • For wave record: select EWS Codec
  • For wave play: select EWS Waveplay (#1-x)
  • Control Panel setting: switches to A,A,A (seen from left to right)

Solution 2 ( digital recording through Synthesizer)

  • lnput selector: Synth
  • Set other switches (left to right) to: M B B (other settings possible, as long as you don't select A, ''cause that's the Codec)
  • Settings in Cool Edit:
    • Menu 'Options'
    • 'Select Wavedevice'
    • 'Wave record': EWS Wave Record
    • 'Wave play': EWS Wave Play #x (x = a number of a wave device. Preferrably use one that's not used by another program).

Solution 3 ( digital recording through Synthesizer, coax/optical input)

  • Set 'Digin' switch on Control Panel to 'coax' or 'opt' (depending on your connection)
  • Set other switches (left to right) to: D B B
  • Input selector: Synth
  • Settings in Cool Edit:
    • Menu 'Options'
    • 'Select Wavedevice'
    • 'Wave record': EWS Wave Record
    • 'Wave play': EWS Wave Play #x (x = a number of a wave device. Preferrably use one that's not used by another program).

This solution probably doesn't fulfill all your desires, but it's a start. Experiment with other settings. It should work, you know! (Hope we didn't make any mistakes :-)

arrblshade.gif (1167 bytes) What are the best settings for Cool Edit?

We can only talk about Cool Edit96, not for the 'Pro' version (anyone else?). In order to place things in a sensible context, first the specs of the computersystem:

  • Pentium 166MMX
  • 64MB internal memory
  • Windows95 OSR2
  • Quantum Fireball 3.8 GB (or something in that direction)

Cool Edit96 settings that work fine for making a 5 minutes stereorecording a 44.1Hz, 16bit (if they are 'the best' we leave to the sound-pro's):

  • Go to Options Menu, Settings
  • System tab
  • 'Total Buffer Size 4 seconds, using 8 buffers'
  • 'Wave Cache 2048'
  • 'Peaks Cach 256'

So: pretty default :-) We can imagine that if you use the Pro-version, recording more than 2 tracks at the same time, you should:

  • increase buffer sizes
  • have a fast computer system
  • not open other programs
  • not enable the drawing of the wave-spectrum during record
  • not use a 'cracked' version :-)

But that's obvious, isn't it?
