Interface Magazine (Dutch)

© 1999-2000 Computer ConText Amsterdam. © Java-applet: Chris Cobb
This item is for Dutch readers only, because it's about 'Interface', a very versatile audio magazine. This magazine is almost a must for the serious and creative audio-artist. It contains many reviews of hardware (synths, effects, samplers, audio cards etc.), audio software, interviews, explanatory articles about things like sampling, midi, recording, you name it. And not to forget: every issue comes with a cd on which you can find demo's, samples, audible examples of things discussed in articles and more.
This magazine is in fact for the same target group as people that use the EWS. Highly recommended!
Subscription: NLG 57,75 a year (6 very glossy issues). More information on www.interface.nl.
Every now and then we have a quick look at stuff that might be interesting for other users. Or something that you should stay away from as far as possible. It can be commercial or non-commercial.  Writing about it doesn't mean that we explicitly recommend the product, because tastes and needs differ. We just want to bring it to your attention.

groovePark sample cd: Sonic Planet II
To top of page
In their latest megaproject Oliver Hutz and his groovePark-team again succeeded in making an outstanding product: a cd chock-full of sophisticated sounds. And the special thing about this cd is, that it's a complete sampled 'remake' of the MicroWave PC extension! Just buy the cd, use the EWS-memory and you don't need a MicroWave PC extension anymore. The samples are in TTI/TTS format (94b format will also be available). The price is a joke compared to the amount of work both gentlemen have put in this product.
Again, highly recommended! More information you can find in our Sample CD Guide and on the GroovePark website.
Cubase VST 5.0 and Cakewalk Pro Audio 9.0

Steinberg released the next version of Cubase VST: 5.0. We don't know where the missing version numbers between 3.7 and 5 have gone, but we think Steinberg just wants to convince the users that what we have here is a major improvement of the product. We have time nor place nor opportunity to review the new VST here, so we have to confine ourselves to refer you to their website for a run-down of all the new and older features.

Of course Twelve Tone Systems had to keep up with the Joneses, so they released version 9.0 of Cakewalk Pro Audio. For this program goes the same as for Cubase: the software's possibilities increase with every new release. Of course functionality improves, but first-time users are to be pitied: they will have to invest a lot of time and patience to master the program. However, the experienced users might welcome the new possibilities.
Again: for the long feature list we refer to the website: www.cakewalk.com.

Terratec Audiosystem EWX 24/96: card for mastering
To top of page

We already got some questions about it, but: no, this is not the successor of the EWS64XL. This is just a very basic card that belongs in the high-end segment of TT's product range. It's meant for mastering. It's from the same blood as the EWS88MT/D cards.
Terratec calls it 'the Mastering Soundcard', but it's not a soundcard in the traditional meaning of the word. Don't expect a hardware synthesizer on board. It's purely high quality IN and OUT, digital (coax and optical) as well as analogue. We are not going to copy all the specs here, if you're interested you'll find them on the Terratec site. Very interesting detail: the card comes with the lite version of the Gigasampler.

Uwe Kindler must have been fed up with the original EWS Control Panel :-) So he made a new one, that directly controls the parameters of the Dream chip. He designed it for users that have no need for the Codec-part of the EWS. It's configurable to your needs, so only the parts that you need show up on your screen, the rest remains hidden. You can read the whole story about EWS proMix on Uwe's own site, that's surely worth a visit (lots of samples there as well). And the great thing about this new mixer is: it's free! But keep in mind: there's no support and Uwe likes to have an email from you if you use it to keep track of the number of people that enjoy it. And to boost his motivation and selfesteem of course ;-) The address of his new site is: http://www.htwm.de/ukindler/index.htm
Anyway, we think that this is a very good initiative and we would like to compliment Uwe for all his good work.
