This page describes the installation of EWS64XL/EWS64S drivers and applications as well as the installation of the Ed!son instrument editor. Please read the note below first.
The latest EWS64XL drivers version numbers are:
EWS64XL VXD 2.28 March 03, 1999
EWS64XL DRV 2.15 March 03, 1999
EWS64XL Firmware 2.20 March 03, 1999
The latest EWS64S drivers are the same as for the EWS64XL. The applications differ! The latest applications update is from December 18, 1998, version D and can be downloaded through our Download Page.
Note that this is our own guide to installation. The instructions are based on the official Terratec installation guidelines and our own experiences with the drivers installation of the September 1998 versions. With later versions only the version numbers on this page have been adapted. We take no responsibility for problems users may encounter on other systems and we are not liable for any damages. You perform the installation at your own risk.
On December 18, 1998 Terratec released the final version of the Ed!son instrument editor 1.21. To keep this an easy-reference installation guide, we removed all instructions for previous releases. In order to make a complete installation you should download the following files from our Download Page:
  • 64xlw95d.exe (includes vxd, drv & firmware)
  • 64xlw95a.exe (includes the latest versions of the EWS64XL applications)
  • Ed!son 1.21 (the ed!sonsetup.exe file, which is optional. It's not necessary for the actual drivers and software update. You only install it in case you want to use the latest version of the Ed!son instrument editor).
  • On April 1, 1999 the 1.50 beta of the Ed!son Instrument editor was released.

For your convenience we split the installation of drivers and software into different items.

TIP! For an even better understanding of what you're doing, we also advice you to read Claus Riethmüller's explanation about the EWS Firmware in the Master Class.

EWS64XL Drivers Installation
This procedure updates your drivers and firmware (vxd, drv, firmware). Terratec distinguishes three different items + version numbers. If you're confused by that: ignore it, because they are updated in one single operation. All things will work out well if you follow these instructions carefully. In this guide we assume you have previous versions of the drivers installed. If you do a first time installation, you can skip the REMOVE64.EXE procedure.

Precautions:

  • Make a note of the current settings of your Terratec Devices. You will find them in the Device Manager.
  • Backup the EWS64 directory. This is just a safety measure. You can delete this backup if the installation of the new drivers appears to be successful.
  • Backup the Windows Registry with ERU.EXE (this program is on your Windows CD).

Actual installation

  • Extract the drivers by double-clicking the self-extracting file 64xlw95d.exe. You will be prompted to specify a target folder. Default is C:\EWS64DRV
  • If you have previous driver versions installed, carefully read the readme.txt that appears automatically. This file needs a small correction from our side: initially it refers to a 64Srem.exe file, but for the EWS64XL you have to use the C:\EWS64\REMOVE\REMOVE64.EXE program (see next paragraph).
  • First run REMOVE64.EXE to remove old drivers and EWS-related registry entries from your system. This program you can find in the C:\EWS64\REMOVE\ folder. Important: running REMOVE64.EXE is mandatory if you have previous driver versions installed! Also make sure that there is no installation CD present in your CD-ROM drive.
Your system reboots during this step in the process.
  • A message pops up that your EWS64 drivers have been successfully removed. You are also told that you can remove the EWS-software by deleting the EWS64 folder. Do not do this, unless it's indeed your intention to relieve your system from the presence of the EWS64 Audio System (software + card). This is not likely, because you wouldn't be reading these update instructions then:-)
    So just press OK.
  • You are now ready to install the new drivers. Close Windows and reboot your system by switching it on and off again (cold reboot).
  • Windows finds the EWS64XL Audio System hardware and a driver update Wizard starts. We predict that Windows can't find the drivers by it's own, so you have to help out: press the button 'Other Locations'.
  • Browse to the folder C:\EWS64DRV, press OK (twice, subsequently) and press 'Finish'.
  • Windows now asks for the Terratec EWS64XL driver disk. At this point many novice users are confused. But it's simple: Do NOT insert any disk or CD!! Just press OK, press 'Browse' in the next pop-up screen and again select the C:\EWS64DRV folder! Because that's where the right stuff really is! You will find 'windrv.cab'. Press OK (again twice, subsequently) and bingo: installation continues.
  • An EWS firmware 2.18 message appears, announcing that the EWS operating system will be copied to the EWS folder. In the next window you have to specify the path of that folder (default is C:\EWS64).
Press 'Unzip': 'Firmx.exe' is unzipped and after that you press OK. Press the 'Close' button.
(Hint: if the dialog of the self-extractor does not seem to appear, it's hidden behind another window. Use ALT-Tab to bring it to the front).
  • You may remove the files mentioned in the message that pops up. Reboot your system.
  • The driver and firmware update is finished. Perform the checks mentioned below. After that you may proceed by updating your EWS64 applications.

Recommended checks to perform

  • Right-click 'My Computer', choose 'Properties', 'Device Manager'. No exclamation marks should appear.
  • Click the plus-sign next to Terratec Devices, select Terratec EWS64XL Synthesizer, click the Properties button.
  • Select the Information tab. Check the following under the heading 'EWS System Software':
    • EWS64 VXD Version should read: 2.22
    • EWS64 DRV Version should read: 2.15
    • EWS64 Firmware Revision should read: 2.18
  • Click the Settings tab. Under the heading 'Direct Sound' you can specify if you want to use 'Music Mode' (default) or 'Game Mode'.
  • Go to the Windows Configuration, item Multimedia and check the following:
    • Audio tab should read: EWS64XL Wave Play #1 and EWS64XL Wave Record.
    • Midi tab: make sure the EWS64XL Synthesizer has been selected (no FM, otherwise you have poor sound quality when playing midi-files).

EWS64-S Drivers update installation
This explanation assumes that you did the first install from the CD that came with your EWS64-S, so it's only meant to show you how to upgrade.
This procedure updates your drivers and firmware (vxd, drv, firmware). For the EWS64-S the same drivers archive has to be used as for the EWS64XL (64xlw95d.exe). Terratec distinguishes three different items + version numbers. If you're confused by that: ignore it, because they are updated in one single operation.

Precautions:

  • Make a note of the current settings of your Terratec Devices. You will find them in the Device Manager.
  • Backup the EWS64S directory. This is just a safety measure. You can delete this backup if the installation of the new drivers appears to be successful.
  • Backup the Windows Registry with ERU.EXE (this program is on your Windows CD).

Installation

  • Download and double-click the self-extracting 64w95d.exe file. It creates a seperate folder for drivers now: EWS64DRV
  • In the directory C:\EWS64S\REMOVE you find the program 64SREM.EXE. Run it: it removes the previous drivers and registry references from your system. Note: this is a mandatory step!
  • Reboot your computer by closing Windows and switching your computer off and on again (cold boot).
  • Windows finds the Terratec EWS64-S Audio System. A wizard starts.
  • Select the second option: 'List of drivers at specific location... etc'
  • Select as type of device: multimedia.
  • Press 'Have disk' button and browse to the EWS64DRV folder. Do not use any driver CD or disk!
  • Select the EWS64S.INF file, press OK and again OK.
  • The Terratec Codec is listed. Press OK.
  • The installation continues automatically by installing the other devices.
  • You get the message: "Operating System will now be copied to your EWS folder". Press OK.
  • The self-extractor window appears again. 'Unzip' in the C:\EWS64S folder (default). You have to press an OK button twice, after that press the 'Close' button of the self-extractor.
  • A 'Boot.txt' pops up, telling you to reboot. You may do that.
  • Everything should work. Do not forget to load a soundset for the EWS-synthesizer.
  • Perform the checks as mentioned under the EWS64XL installation item.
  • Note that the EWS64-S applications differ from the EWS64XL applications (mainly the Control Panel). You can download them through our Download Page.

EWS64XL Applications installation
Make sure you downloaded the latest version of the applications archive through our Download Page. The applications archive is called 64xlw95a.exe. This is a self-extracting archive. It contains the following applications and files:
File Version
editosign.gif (1209 bytes) Control Panel 2.12
editosign.gif (1209 bytes) EWSinit 2.11
editosign.gif (1209 bytes) Firmware 2.18
editosign.gif (1209 bytes) FX Panel 2.05
editosign.gif (1209 bytes) SetManager 2.10
editosign.gif (1209 bytes) Audio In Panel 1.05
editosign.gif (1209 bytes) Virtual Channels 1.05
editosign.gif (1209 bytes) Media Player 2.11
  • Extract the files into the C:\EWS64 folder (default) by pressing Unzip. After that: OK, Close.
  • Before using the EWS-Synth: do not forget to load a soundset through the SetManager first.
  • According to Terratec these new applications should work better with Windows 98.

First Aid
  • Sometimes users experience strange effects after a new installation of drivers. This doesn't have to be alarming. Most of the time another (few) reboots solve the problem. However, this remark mainly applies to older (beta) versions of the EWS-drivers.
  • If you get 'feedback-loops' (screaming sound), mute all inputs of the Control Panel and check one by one which Input causes the feedback.
  • You also should check Midi- and Wave-device settings in audio software.
  • If you have serious problems after a drivers installation, check de Device Manager for conflicts.
  • Another possible cause of problems can be an 'older' Windows 95 version. If it's already been a few years since you bought your computer with a pre-installed Windows 95, it's very likely that you did not run the Windows bug-fixing Service Packs. Ask your dealer or go to the Microsoft site for more information. We recommend you to install those Service Packs.
  • Since drivers version 2 the ewsinit.exe line in your autoexec.bat is no longer necessary. It should be removed or REM'd! You should only leave this line present if you plan to use the card in DOS-mode and/or have two EWS cards in your system.
  • No sound when playing midi-files: check if you loaded a soundset through the SetManager.

Ed!son 1.21 instrument editor installation
On September 16 the Ed!son final version 1.0 was released. Installation should be no problem, as it comes with a neat installation program. So just download the ed!sonsetup.exe, double-click the file and follow the instructions on your screen. An un-installer is also provided. Nevertheless is also wise to also log the installation with a program like CleanSweep.

The manuals for Ed!son are wrapped in a separate archive called ED!SONMANUALS.EXE. Just double-click this archive to auto-extract it.

On July 2, 1999 the 1.56 beta of the Ed!son Instrument editor was released.

All mentioned files are available through our Download Page and of course via the Terratec website.

Installation instructions Windows NT 4 drivers for EWS64 L/XL
A remark in advance: we from the SCP have no Windows NT machines at hand, so we just copy the instructions as provided by Terratec here. For the same reason we cannot answer any questions about these drivers. Of course we can collect questions and make a special page for it.

The latest release of the Windows NT 4 drivers is: 1.0 beta 2 (July 2, 1999)

Note: Terratec made a special NT-drivers FAQ available to us. You can dowload it via our Download Page (Documentation section).

Hardware configuration:

  • You have to configure the EWS64 with the ews64cfg.exe tool. Since you cannot use it under Windows NT you must copy it to a bootable floppy disk. If your BIOS supports ISA PNP it is recommended to set all parameters "PNP" and to disable MIDI-2.

Also read  the document containing the specifications about limitations and known bugs.

Note that the SCP does not have further information on the NT drivers! Please use ewsnt@terratec.de for beta feedback.
