EWS64-S Software
On this page questions and answers about EWS64-S software issues have been listed. Items proceeded by a tiny Terratec Logo originate from the official Terratec FAQ. Questions that still need an answer are proceeded by a question mark. Some questions can appear on more than one page.

arrblshade.gif (1167 bytes) Large soundsets make Setmanager crash 990117

When you compile a large soundset in Ed!son, after that, when loading it into the Setmanager, the Setmanager can crash. We asked Terratec support for comment.

This is a known bug, sometimes the system crashes, when you try to load a big soundset (as big as the memory on the card). Until now this happens only with 32 or 64MB Simms. I had this problem on my own and after three or four tries it was possible to load the soundset via the setmanager. This happens sporadically, but I hope we fix this problem soon. Till this, the best is to divide the soundset in some pieces and load them one after another into the Setmanager.

arrblshade.gif (1167 bytes) Can I also use the EWS64XL Drivers Installation Guide on this site for the EWS64-S?

First you should read the installation instructions that come with the EWS64-S. But if you need more explanation: the installation and upgrades of drivers of the XL and the S are pretty much the same. One  difference we noticed, is that EWS64-S firmware upgrades are implemented in the applications archive file, while with the XL this item is implemented in the drivers archive file.

The on-board 2MB memory is not sufficient. Unlike the EWS64XL, the EWS-S does not come with an extra 4MB SIMM. So you will have to buy that 4MB (or more) yourself. After that you will be able to load the largest soundset. We already mentioned this matter to Terratec, because: what's the price of 4MB nowadays? It will make a better impression on the customers and safe some questions to the support departement.

Issue from Terratec FAQ I have upgraded to the latest driver version but the previous firmware version is still displayed.

The latest firmware (the EWS operating system) is always included with the latest driver version. The file is called EWS64_OS.BIN. This file is automatically copied to the main Windows directory.

If, after upgrading your drivers, the latest version number is not displayed initialize the EWS using the 64SINIT.EXE initialization program before Windows loads. This will cause the firmware version that is in the same directory (normally C:\EWS64S) to be loaded into the EWS. Also, copy the EWS64_OS.BIN to your EWS installation directory. You should also be sure to perform a cold boot after upgrading the drivers.

You can see what driver and firmware version are being used in the Device Manager. Just select the synthesizer under 'TerraTec Audio Devices' and click on 'Properties'. Then select the 'Information' tab.

Issue from Terratec FAQ The EWS64 S task menu no longer displays correctly after installing Windows 98.

Symptoms: the EWS64 S task menu no longer displays correctly after installing Windows 98. The options extend outside the display area and are unrecognizable.

Cause: You are probably still working with an older version of the Control Panel. The Control Panel included with the latest EWS64 S applications no longer causes this distortion of the display.

Issue from Terratec FAQ How to modify the EWS64-S resources settings?

When you try to modify the EWS64 S resources in the Device Manager, a window with the title 'No modifications permitted'  and the text 'This resource setting may not be modified' is displayed. So how to change the resource settings for the EWS64-S?

The EWS64 S resources may not be modified in the Device Manager. The resources can be modified using the 64SMIXER.EXE program under DOS (not a DOS window). This program can also be started directly from the EWS64 S context menu (right mouse button on taskbar mixer symbol). Just select the 'SETUP' option.
Take note of free and reserved resources (IRQs, DMA channels and I/O ports) before making any changes.

Issue from Terratec FAQ Yellow exclamation mark beside the DigitalControl driver after changing the settings in the synthesizer driver.

Shut down Windows, switch off the computer and wait for approx. one minute. After a reboot, the exclamation mark should have disappeared.

Important: Please note that Pentium II mainboards with Intel BX chipset cannot use IRQ 9 for ISA cards anymore!

Issue from Terratec FAQ What can I do with the 'Virtual Channels'?

Output ports 1 and 2 (OUT-1 and OUT-2) can be configured separately.

Therefore, you can set the different effect levels when playing back several WAVE files over the synthesizer or you can, if playing back WAVE files in the EWS' four-channel mode, use the ports separately (like 4 mono ports).

The MIDI volume and the panorama can, of course, be configured separately from WAVE audio.

On our Download Page you can find the vchaneng.zip file that discusses this subject in more detail.

Issue from Terratec FAQ After increasing the number of 'Synth Play' drivers, I cannot regulate the output volume of WAV files anymore.

Windows (95/98) can only manage a maximum of 8 audio drivers automatically. If you are using 8 or more synth play drivers for the synthesizer and 1 codec play driver for the codec, Windows doesn't 'know' which driver to use to playback system sounds. This is why regulating the volume of system sounds and all other audio files is a problem if they are being played back by an application that doesn't allow a special audio driver to be configured.

Because there usually is no good reason to have several audio drivers you should reduce the number of synth play drivers to 7 or less.

Issue from Terratec FAQ Why can't I start the mixer in WaveLab's recording window?

This happens if you have configured the synth record driver as the WaveLab recording driver. The synthesizer does not support Windows' own mixer. Therefore, you cannot use this function. Please use the EWS Control Panel for this purpose.

Issue from Terratec FAQ What is the latency for MIDI playback on the EWS64 S?

Typical latency is < 1 ms but it definitely depends on the system's processing load and is therefore operating-system-dependent. Normally, however, it cannot exceed 10 ms. In this case, Windows 95/98 shows better results than Windows NT. The sequencer selected (16-bit or 32-bit software) is also a factor. According to experience, 16-bit sequencers, such as the Cubasis AV-XL Edition included are more accurate than 32-bit sequencers.

Issue from Terratec FAQ My MIDI sequencer program crashes regularly (e.g. with 'General Protection Fault in MMSYSTEM.DLL')

This is probably due to the virtual MIDI drivers. Make sure that the virtual MIDI drivers in any MIDI sequencer program are only configured for in OR output (see also new version of software help).

Issue from Terratec FAQ

I have installed Cubase VST 3.6. When I choose the "EWS64 S Synth Play" preset, the card is muted though I can see the playback in the monitors.

This problem is caused by some strange settings in VST's EWS presets. The input for the driver is activated and the card is set to half duplex. Turn off the input of the driver and set the card to "full duplex". Also you shoud set the synchronization to "Sampleposition output" to improve the audio-/MIDI synchronization.
